IDENTIFICATION OF UNKNOWN
GENERAL AIMS
To develop/apply attention to detail, problem solving and deductive skills (Sherlock Holmes!)
To develop/apply critical thinking
SPECIFIC AIMS
To familiarize with techniques used for the characterization of organic compounds
To efficiently analyse your experimental observations and
spectroscopic data (e.g. IR) and draw conclusions

THE TASK
Each student will receive > 200 mg of an unknown organic compound, which may or may not be pure.
The first task will be to PURIFY
The second task will be to CHARACTERIZE
(solubility, mp, bp, refractive index, UV/vis, IR, 1H & 13C NMR, EA (MA), etc)
If necessary, the third task will be to DERIVATISE,
Check the A. I. Vogel, "Textbook of Practical Organic Chemistry" 5th Edition, Longman (ISBN 0-582-46236-3).
Finally, using a flawless logical discussion with support from both the literature and your observations,
PROVE the IDENTITY of the unknown. That means some library work for you: Chemical Abstracts!
