SYNTHESIS CHALLENGE
Each student will be given one synthetic target at the beginning of the course.
The project will involve:
(A) The preparation of a synthetic proposal for the specified target in three (or more) steps,
which will be supported fully with appropriate primary bibliography (research articles)

AIMS OF TASK (A)
To learn how to search the vast chemical literature efficiently and how to use Reaxys
To learn how to asses the dangers associated with chemicals
To stimulate critical thinking and your creativity
To develop skills on writing a professional synthetic proposal with attention to detail

To apply organic synthesis techniques (from org lab I) in a real organic synthesis project
To learn and gain experience on advanced organic synthesis techniques (Dean stark, reactions under inert atmosphere, etc)

BEFORE THE LAB - YOUR PROPOSAL
(1) Using the available databases (Reaxys, Web of Science, Scopus, Organic Syntheses, https://www.surechembl.org/search/) propose a synthetic sequence that will involve at least three steps. Use your creativity and critical thinking to assess which synthetic procedures are better and safer than the others. Also keep in mind that you might need to find experimental procedures for similar compounds and apply them for your target.

(2) After you decided on your synthetic sequence, you will need to complete the Risk Assessment Form for each step of your synthesis.
(3) Finally you need to assess the total cost (including all reagents) for the preparation of 1 g of final product.
Prepare a proposal with all the information for steps (1)-(3) and e-mail it to the lab coordinator ([email protected]).

The lab coordinator will send back to you an edited version of your proposal with changes that need to be done for its improvement (stylistic and content). When you receive your edited document please enable the show "all markup" option and check the changes that were done. By doing so you can learn and improve your writing style from one document to the other. Don't forget that one of the purposes of the course is for you guys to develop scientific writing skills and this feedback mechanism can guide to achieve this goal. Below we show how can you enable the "all markup" option.

Also, consult relevant material from the internet, especially for experimental set ups or apparatus that you did not use in the past.
Follow the experimental procedure with awareness as to what is happening after addition of each reagent.
Do not blindly follow the instructions BUT understand WHY you do what you do in each step of the procedure,
and WHAT is happening in your reaction at any certain point.
ASK these questions to yourself, if you do not know the answer search the literature, consult the TAs, postdocs and/or the lab coordinator.
Blindly following instructions with NO AWARENESS of what is happening it is also a SAFETY HAZARD.
